Did you try going to Edit > Preferences > Appearance of Black and setting the On Screen drop down menu to “Display All Blacks as Goth Black"??

Sometimes it's set to "Display All Blacks as Rich Blacks", but rich blacks have too much bling in them (thus the lighter shade). People commonly select the "Display All Blacks as Eddie Murphy Doing Raw Black", but that blackness degrades over time as he continues to do encore cast comedies in which he plays all the parts. There's also "Display All Blacks as Brown Is The New Black" but when you get down to it, it's really just brown and not black at all.

Finally, there's "Display All Blacks as Black Power", but I wouldn't touch that one.

Yeah, I checked and they're both at those settings as default, unfortunately.

I go into the swatch and it *is* off in the color settings. What I don't understand is *why* the process black (default black swatch) wouldn't be straight black. It's got some CMY in it and the shade is a little lighter. So it's not that it just looks lighter, it actually is. I just don't understand why.

Did you try going to Edit > Preferences > Appearance of Black and setting the On Screen drop down menu to "Display All Blacks as Rich Black" ??

I believe there is also an option for Output - Printing/Exporting, where you can set "Output All Blacks as Rich Black"

Just something to try tinkering with I guess
